Hello GVN! Tell us your story thus far. How long have you been making music for and where do you come from?

Hello Enda! I think I’ve been making music for at least 8 years now as a hobby mainly, but only the past couple of months or so I’ve decided to go professional with it. I come from a town called Derry in the North of Ireland, an amazing town that has a great passion for music. When I started my production journey in 2013 I never had my own laptop, so I used to constantly ‘borrow’ my sister’s one and sneakily downloaded FL Studio on it, but always after 30 minutes of using it I had to give it back! A year or so later I got my own laptop, thankfully.

When I came over to Liverpool for university, education became my main priority and I started to lose touch with making music, which was tough although my degree was my main priority. In 2018 my mental state wasn’t the greatest, I hit a wall and decided to wrap up making music for the foreseeable. Then at the end of 2019 after completing university, I felt fresh and decided it would be great to jump back on the production wagon. With so many years of not making music and ideas bottled up in my head I had to get them out and where I’m at right now, I’m glad I made that decision that led me to where I am now.

Let’s talk Anjunbeats. You’ve just signed a new deal with them, and your first single “I Don’t” just came out. Can you give us a hint of what’s to come in the next few months?

What a privilege it is to be part of the Anjuna family! Something that I’ve always dreamed of throughout my musical journey. The next few months are going to be big, got loads on the way including a remix next month and some more singles after! Can’t wait to show what else I’ve been up to :)

Being a relatively young producer who uses minimal equipment to create music, and has proven it’s all about the ear and not the gear. What’s your 2 cents for anyone out there who’s struggling to make music right now?

Since I started making music, my laptop and headphones where always something I could rely on and figured I was doing fine without loads of equipment, so thought why not just keep it going? I confess that I haven’t upgraded my software either, so I’m still stuck in the medieval times with FL Studio 10, which might be strange but it works for me.

My advice for other producers out there would be to seriously not give up, although it sounds cliché. I taught myself with YouTube tutorials and most of the time I don’t even know what some plugins do, if it sounds good it sounds good and you don’t really need to be a wizard to be a great producer. It’s hard to find motivation in these times but dig deep, keep going and don’t give up your passion for making music (which I almost did)!
Tell us about the collaboration with Third Party and Errol Reid. It’s a big record! How did that come about originally?

Thank you! one of my favourite tracks to work on and so glad with how it’s been received by everyone so far. Two years ago I made a track named ‘Sunshine’ which was in my laptop for a while and never seen the light of day. At the start of last year I came across it and thought I’d start hunting for labels, and one of the emails I sent to was Third Party. A few weeks went by and nothing, so I assumed they may’ve missed it or didn’t really like it which was fair.
However a month later I got a reply from them saying they loved it, but wanted to put their touch to it. So, straight away I jumped on my laptop, sorted the stems out and sent it their way. Then a few months later they turned it into gold, but thought the vocal I originally had could be taken out for something else, and that’s where Errol came in. His amazing voice was the final piece to the puzzle and really made it stand out. What an honour it was to work with all of them, artists I looked up to when I started making progressive/big room music and ended it by collaborating with them, funny how it came full circle.

Finally, hopefully you’ll get the opportunity soon to play some shows! Are there any places or venues that are on your dream list to play?

Fingers crossed, all being well! My last gig was in 2017 but now with having a great platform to release my music, hopefully it can bring the opportunity of playing out more which I love to do! At the moment I’d play anywhere if I had the chance, but my dream list would be during ADE in Amsterdam, Printworks or Creamfields. I’d also love to get a chance to gig back home in Ireland; preferably Jika Jika in my hometown Derry, Lush in Portrush or AVA in Belfast!
